A ton of new behind the scenes photos showing Engineers and more!

A load of new photos have appeared on Facebook, showing, in a surprising amount of detail, the efforts that went into the practical makeup effects on Prometheus.

We see Daniel James as the ‘Sacrifice Engineer’ and Ian Whyte as the ‘Final Engineer’, and Guy Pearce as Peter Weyland. There’s also a glimpse of a previously unseen ‘Elder Engineer’. While storyboards and designs for this character are seen in the Prometheus: The Art of The Film book, this is confirmation that a scene was filmed, which will hopefully make its way into the extended cut of the film.

Check out the gallery below, and thanks to seeasea for the link!

Prometheus is directed by Ridley Scott, from a screenplay by Damon Lindelof and Jon Spaihts. The film stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Sean Harris, Rafe Spall, Logan Marshall-Green, Patrick Wilson and Kate Dickie, and is now on release around the world.

An intriguing new Prometheus viral video surfaces. What’s happening on October 11th 2012?

*Update*

After making some enquiries, I have been told this is indeed connected to the home video release!

The original article:

It looks like Fox isn’t quite done with its epic viral campaign for Prometheus.

Now a new site has surfaced at www.whatis101112.com, featuring a brief video of Guy Pearce as Peter Weyland and references to Thus Spoke Zarathustra.

So what does it all mean? Well, Baring in mind the US date format, 101112 equates to the 11th October 2012. Some have speculated that this is a reference to the films home video release, but in the USA they traditionally happen on a Tuesday, and the 11th October 2012 is a Thursday.

Take a look at the Weyland Industries website, and you will see this entry on the Corporate Timeline page for the 11th October 2012:

Weyland Corporation is recognized as a legal entity and corporation under United States law and receives their Certificate of Incorporation from the Companies House in the United Kingdom. Due to the combined value of Sir Peter Weyland’s various patents and patent-pendings, the company incorporates with a higher fair market valuation than any other company in history.

So, what can it all mean… ?

Anyway, here’s the video.

After Prometheus, Guy Pearce moves to Iron Man 3

Following his role as the iconic Peter Weyland in Prometheus, it seems that Guy Pearce is moving on to more Sci-Fi with a staring role in Iron Man 3, which begins production soon.

According to Variety, Pearce is in ‘final talks’ to take on the role of Geneticist Aldrich Killian.

Those familiar with Iron Man’s six-issue ‘Extremis’ comic book arc will know Killian as the creator of nanotechnology that is acquired by terrorists, and it has been rumoured for a while that nanotec will play a part in the story – this would seem to confirm it.

Filming on Iron Man 3 begins in May, and once again stars Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle and Scarlett Johansson, as well as Sir Ben Kingsley, who is set to play the villain.

Prometheus is directed by Ridley Scott, from a screenplay by Damon Lindelof and Jon Spaihts. The film stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Sean Harris, Rafe Spall, Logan Marshall-Green, Patrick Wilson and Kate Dickie, and is due for release on June 8th 2012 in the USA, and June 1st 2012 in the UK.

My name is Peter Weyland, and if you’ll indulge me, I’d like to change the world

Days after the revelation that Guy Pearce is playing Peter Weyland in Prometheus, Fox has now begun a viral marketing compaign for the movie.

First up is this talk from the TED website, dated 2023, where Weyland talks about mankind’s technological strides and the legend of Prometheus. Conceived by Ridley Scott and Damon Lindelof, the clip is directed by Scott’s son, Luke.

“Peter Weyland has been a magnet for controversy since he announced his intent to build the first convincingly humanoid robotic system by the end of the decade.

“Whether challenging the ethical boundaries of medicine with nanotechnology or going toe to toe with the Vatican itself on the issue of gene-therapy sterilization, Sir Peter prides himself on his motto, “If we can, we must.” After a three year media blackout, Weyland has finally emerged to reveal where he’s heading next. Wherever that may be, we will most certainly want to follow.”

Via TED we also learn a little about the character:

“Sir Peter Weyland was born in Mumbai, India at the turn of the Millennium. The progeny of two brilliant parents; His mother, an Oxford Educated Professor of Comparative Mythology, his father, a self-taught software Engineer, it was clear from an early age that Sir Peter’s capabilities would only be eclipsed by his ambition to realize them. By the age of fourteen, he had already registered a dozen patents in a wide range of fields from biotech to robotics, but it would be his dynamic break-throughs in generating synthetic atmosphere above the polar ice cap that gained him worldwide recognition and spawned an empire.

“In less than a decade, Weyland Corporation became a worldwide leader in emerging technologies and launched the first privatized industrial mission to leave the planet Earth. “There are other worlds than this one,” Sir Peter boldly declared, “And if there is no air to breathe, we will simply have to make it.”

TED is a real-world organisation, and it’s good to see them having a little fun to help promote the film. The blurb accompanying the video states:

Also now online is the corporate site of Weyland Industries, which says of the video:

“Considered a seminal moment in the career of our founder Peter Weyland, this 2023 TED Talk launched Weyland Corp into the international spotlight.

“To honor this moment, Weyland Corp is planning to offer a new round of investment soon. Interested parties can expect to find out more within the next few days.

#weylandinvestors”

We’ll be seeing much more soon, I am sure!

Guy Pearce’s Prometheus role revealed?

It seems that Guy Pearce is playing Peter Weyland, providing another crucial link to the Alien franchise.

Hungarian site FilmSite.hu reports a quote from Ridley Scott (with thanks to Alien Prequel News for the translation):

“When the first ‘Alien’ movie and ‘Blade Runner’ were made, I thought that in the near future the world will be owned by large companies. This is why we have the Tyrell Corporation in ‘Blade Runner’, and Weyland-Yutani in ‘Alien’. They sent the Nostromo spaceship.

“The Prometheus is owned by an entrepreneur called Peter Weyland, and is played by Guy Pearce. That’s the connection between the two films, and nothing more. Prometheus is a new film, a new world, and is full of new ideas. And of course new monsters as well.”

As APN says, there’s no indication of when or where Scott said this, but it does tally with our theory that his role is a small but crucial one.

Hopefully as the publicity ramps up, and more footage and trailers are released, we’ll get to see a little more for ourselves.
