Tony Scott 1944 – 2012
Paramount Pictures have officially announced that the late Tony Scott’s classic hit Top Gun is getting a limited IMAX 3D release, followed by a Blu-ray release in February 2013.
I don’t envy Paramount when it comes to the timing of this release. Although the 3D conversion was supervised by Scott before his death, some may see this as a cash-in from Paramount. On the other hand, with what I imagine is a considerable investment made in the conversion, Paramount understandably want to see a return. I think the timing of the release is about right.
My understanding is that Paramount were going to use this re-release to gauge the public’s interest in a sequel, but with development on the film abandoned after Scott’s death, that me no longer be a part of the plan. Besides, which director would want the responsibility of picking up the baton on this project?
Anyway, here’s Paramount’s press release in full:
“TOP GUN” TO BE RELEASED IN IMAX® 3D FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME
THE CLASSIC FILM RETURNS TO THE BIG SCREEN EXCLUSIVELY IN SELECT IMAX 3D THEATRES FOR A LIMITED ENGAGEMENT BEGINNING FEBRUARY 8, 2013
“TOP GUN” Debuts on Blu-ray 3D™/ Blu-ray 2D™ Two-Disc Set February 19, 2013
HOLLYWOOD, CA (December 11, 2012) – “TOP GUN,” Paramount Pictures’ 1986 classic from director Tony Scott, producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, and starring Tom Cruise, takes off on a new adventure with an exclusive six-day 3D engagement in select IMAX® theatres beginning February 8, 2013. The film has been re-mastered for the IMAX® 3D release and subsequent debut on Blu-ray.
TOP GUN was re-mastered for the big screen from high-resolution original negative scans and painstakingly converted to 3D by Legend3D under the supervision of the film’s director, Tony Scott. Rendered in 3D, the film’s complex, long shots reveal extraordinary depth and clarity, allowing viewers to explore every detail of the action. From the spectacular aerial dogfights to the intense close-ups in the cockpits, each frame enables the audience to feel a part of the story.
The story of an elite group of pilots competing to be the best in their class and earn the title of “TOP GUN” captured the imagination of a generation and earned a worldwide box office of over $350 million upon its release. The film stars Tom Cruise as Maverick and Kelly McGillis as his civilian instructor. The film also stars Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards and Meg Ryan.
The “TOP GUN” Blu-ray 3D disc presents the film with pristine high definition picture and sparkling sound in spectacular 3D for the ultimate home viewing experience. The Blu-ray 2D includes the re-mastered film in high definition, along with a six-part documentary on the making of the movie, a behind-the-scenes featurette, interviews with Tom Cruise, commentary by producer Jerry Bruckheimer, director Tony Scott, co-screenwriter Jack Epps, Jr. and more. The website 3D Focus has an interesting article on Prometheus and its use of 3D.
I’m not a fan of 3D, but have to admit in Prometheus it works well, and apparently the movie’s Aerial Unit Stereographer Adam Sculthorp insists it’s the only way to watch it:
“With Prometheus, every shot was crafted for 3D with so much care and attention. This film really has been made for 3D. Not to watch it in 3D …. I think you are going to miss out on the experience Ridley’s designed for the viewer.”
“It’s not about the constant wow factor of 3D; it’s about enjoying the overall experience and 3D has been used as part of that overall experience… Ridley Scott is synonymous with this type of film so for him to have watched every sequence critically in 3D, constantly from day one, is really going to come across. Overall the entire stereo team from James Goldman on main unit to the 3D team at MPC have done an excellent job.”
Meanwhile, Damien Fagnou of FX house MPC addresses the issues of light loss on 3D projection, and how it might affect Prometheus:
“The stereo version of the movie has also been graded in such a way that it compensates for the slight dimness that is introduced by the glasses and the resulting experience is truly immersive and thrilling.”
The article as a whole is very interesting and worth a read!
Prometheus is directed by Ridley Scott, from a screenplay by Damon Lindelof and Jon Spaihts. The film stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Sean Harris, Rafe Spall, Logan Marshall-Green, Patrick Wilson and Kate Dickie, and is due for release on June 8th 2012 in the USA, and June 1st 2012 in the UK.

Total Film had a chat with Ridley Scott about how he found working in 3D for the first time on Prometheus.
To say he was impressed would be an understatement:
“How was it working in 3D?
I’m kind of naturally visual anyway, that’s where I come from. And you’re working off superb 3D screens, which are on the floor, and are really big. It was just wonderful.
I was shooting on 3D, then seeing it on the floor. It was easy, I must say.
Do you push it in a way we haven’t seen before?
Well, I mean, yeah. You only want to push it so far, before it becomes arrows popping out of the screen and stabbing you in the eye. You use it for visual effect.
Is it more immersive, giving depth?
Yes, yes. And you can do that afterwards, by the way. I’m actually decided right now how deep to make it on certain sequences.
So you can literally, as it were, twiddle a knob, and the depth will increase. It’s kind of bizarre, but there it is. Technologically it’s absolutely staggering.
I was working with MPC in London, looking after almost 1,300 big FX shots, and every night they would pipe through shots to a big screen in my office in Lexington Street; I would sit there watching a sequence that had just been graded or refined in perfect 3D. Really amazing.”
Personally, I’ve never been that big a fan of 3D – done well it’s ok, but a gimmick, done badly, especially with post-conversions, it’s unwatchable.
However, if there’s one person whose involvement in 3D does get my interest, it’s Ridley Scott. With such a strong visual style, I don’t believe he would use the technology if he didn’t have faith in it. Fingers crossed!
